Our History

Crystal Pool and Spa would not exist today if it weren't for the vision and perseverance of our beloved patriarch, Verne Brown. Verne moved to Massachusetts from Upstate New York in 1948. He met and married his wife Nancy, a Bellingham native, and settled in town. After installing an inground pool in his own backyard, he recognized the need for a local business that specialized in pools, service, and supplies.

Verne began Crystal Pool and Spa in 1959, working from home, eventually incorporating in 1966. The company quickly grew into the regional leader in pool services and supplies that it is today. To accommodate that growth, Verne built a 7,000-square-foot warehouse at 95 Mechanic Street (Rte. 140), Bellingham, where we are still located today.

Though Verne and his son Don are no longer with us, their legacy continues to shape everything we do at Crystal Pool and Spa. What began as Verne’s vision has grown into one of the largest locally owned pool and spa retail and service businesses in the region—a true rarity in an age dominated by box stores and impersonal service. Today, the business remains proudly family-run. Don’s daughter Kim McManus now leads the company as president. You’ll still find Don’s daughter, Cindy, behind the counter, welcoming customers with the same friendly, knowledgeable service we’ve been known for since day one.

On the service side, Don’s grandsons, Keenan (Kim’s son) and Timmy (Cindy’s son), along with Kim’s husband, Scott McManus—our service manager—carry on the tradition of excellence and care that Verne and Don instilled in all of us. They are joined by other dedicated family members and a team of longtime staff who feel like family—each one committed to delivering the same high level of service our customers have come to trust.

We’re honored to continue serving Bellingham and the surrounding communities with the same commitment to quality and personal service that has defined us for more than six decades.
